The School of Automotive Engineering is made up of 4 institutions,— the Department of Automotive Service Engineering, the Department of Intelligent Vehicle Engineering, the College Students’ Innovation Practice Center, the Automotive Engineering Experiment Teaching Center, and 1 collaborative institution—the School of Intelligent Automotive Industry. At the same time, the School of Automotive Engineering, as the chairman unit, took the lead in the establishment of Jilin Society of Automotive Service Engineering.
1. Introduction
The School of Automotive Engineering now has 2 undergraduate majors—Automotive Service Engineering and Intelligent Vehicle Engineering, and 18 professional laboratories, including Automobile Structure Laboratory, Intelligent Automobile Design Laboratory and Automobile Intelligent Testing Laboratory. At the same time, the School has established cooperation with FAW Group Co., Ltd., CRRC Changchun Rail Transit Co., Ltd., Beijing Baidu Zhixing Technology Co., Ltd., Guangxi Automobile Group and other enterprises. Based on the industry associations and taking the Industry-University-Institute cooperation as a platform, the School has established Guangxi Automobile Group—the Postdoctoral Workstation Laboratory of the School of Automotive Engineering of Changchun Institute of Technology (CIT), China Metrology Certification (CMA)—the Intelligent Testing Laboratory of the School of Automotive Engineering of CIT, etc. While ensuring the conditions and quality of students’ practice, the School has built a bridge between the scientific research achievements of the College-Engineering-Production Enterprise Application.
2. Faculty
The School has a team of teachers with reasonable academic structure, title structure and age structure. There are 20 staff, 14 professional technicians and 5 professors. Among the full-time teachers, there are 11 teachers with doctor’s degree and 6 post-doctors. Teachers with doctor’s degree account for 78.57% among the total number.
3. Academic Achievements
Teachers of the School have presided over 3 National Natural Science Foundation projects, 56 Provincial and Ministerial Scientific Research projects, and 11 Enterprise Entrusted Scientific and Technological Research projects; won 10 scientific research awards at all levels, including 6 Provincial and Ministerial awards such as Jilin Provincial Scientific and Technological Progress Award; successfully applied for 56 authorized patents, including 15 invention patents; published 168 academic papers, including more than 57 retrieved by SCI and EI; published 4 academic monographs and prepared 6 group standards.
The School attaches importance to the cultivation of students’ scientific and technological innovation and practical ability. In the past 5 years, the School has organized students to participate in the China “Internet+” College Students’ Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, the National College Students’ Mechanical Innovation Design, “Higher Education Cup” National College Students’ Advanced Mapping Technology and Product Information Modeling Innovation Competition, and won 2 national first prizes, 13 national second prizes, 19 national third prizes and 234 provincial awards. Students’ excellent innovative spirit and practical ability are highly praised by employers.
4. Discipline Construction
The Transportation Engineering Discipline of the School takes the digital development of automobile and intelligent transportation as the subjects, and takes the vehicle road coordination technology, digital twin accurate mapping technology, vehicle emission detection and purification technology as the carrier to provide technical support and services for automobile, intelligent transportation and other industries. It has a high academic status and influence in the industry.
In order to promote the development of disciplines, cultivate scientific and technological talents, promote the exchange and dissemination of advanced technologies, and accelerate the transformation of scientific and technological achievements, the School, led by the Transportation Engineering Discipline, has established the Jilin Society of Automotive Service Engineering with more than 11 well-known universities, 10 automobile service enterprises and nearly 300 members in Jilin Province.
5. Employment and Further Study
The graduates of the School have solid theory, strong engineering practical ability and good comprehensive quality. The employment rate over the years has reached more than 90%. After graduation, they are mainly engaged in professional-related design and manufacturing, production management and technical services for large and medium-sized state-owned enterprises, scientific research institutes and other institutions. Major employers in recent years mainly includes Power China, China CNR Group, China Water Resources and Hydropower Engineering Bureau, China Construction Engineering Bureau, China Construction Eighth Engineering Bureau Co., Ltd., etc.
The proportion of students enrolled in a postgraduate programme has also increased year by year. Students have been admitted to famous universities at home and abroad, including Nanjing University, Jilin University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Manchester University, etc.
6. International Exchange
The School attaches great importance to international exchange, and has established cooperation with the School of International Education to provide more opportunities for students to go abroad, broaden their horizons and improve their professional level. In the past five years, the School has sent young backbone teachers to universities such as the University of Ottawa in Canada, the University of Sydney in Australia, the University of the West of Scotland in the UK to carry out research cooperation as visiting scholars. In order to further expand the depth of Sino-foreign cooperation of the School, effectively enhance the international influence and reputation of the School’s disciplines, the School has allocated relevant staff to promote the introduction of international talents and Sino-foreign cooperative overseas projects, and strive to provide more exchanges and scientific research platforms for teachers and students.
