Recently, the 6th Northeast China Aging-Friendly Architectural Design Competition for 2025 concluded. The event was organized by the Department of Education of Liaoning Province, the Civil Engineering and Architectural Society of Liaoning, the Civil Engineering and Architectural Society of Jilin Province, and the Liaoning Provincial Association of the Aging Industry, with Shenyang Jianzhu University and Jilin Jianzhu University serving as co-organizers. CIT student team from the School of Architecture, guided by faculty members Zhang Yan and Quan Zhen, won the first prize in the Architectural Planning category with their project “Shadow and Green Garden • Courtyard of Harmony – A Composite Aging-Friendly Architectural Design Based on the 'Garden-Courtyard Coexistence' Model”The team consisted of students Sun Yuan, Shi Yu, Wang Yudi, Jin Yingjie, and Lan Xin.
This year’s competition focused on the theme “Renovation of Changchun Qinqinyuan Elderly Care and Rehabilitation Center and Design of a Community Comprehensive Service Center” It addressed the dual challenges of urban population aging and spatial obsolescence, requiring participants to develop systematic solutions from an urban renewal perspective, including urban design, existing building renovation, and new community service center design. The competition aimed to promote innovation and practice in aging-friendly architectural design, exploring pathways for building an “institution-community-home” three-tier elderly care service network that aligns with regional characteristics.
CIT’s award-winning project, “Shadow and Green Garden • Courtyard of Harmony” is rooted in Changchun's regional culture and environmental features, innovatively proposing the “Garden-Courtyard Coexistence” design model. Through the meticulous renovation of the existing elderly care and rehabilitation center and the integrated design of an embedded community comprehensive service center, the project creates a functional, intergenerational, green, and intelligent aging-friendly living environment. It also explores spatial narratives, place memory, and smart health and wellness, demonstrating CIT students’ sense of responsibility in serving local development and addressing social needs.
This achievement reflects CIT’s solid outcomes in architectural talent cultivation and design education. CIT will continue to encourage and support students’participation in high-level discipline competitions, uphold the principle of “promoting learning and teaching through competition” and continuously enhance students’ professional competence, innovative spirit, and ability to solve complex engineering problems.
