15-20 October 2025 — The national finals of the 18th National College Student Structural Design Competition were held at Shaoxing University, Zhejiang. A CIT team made up of Liu Xianfeng, Xu Yiwen and Xu Boshen, coached by Ni Hongguang and Wen Yong, was awarded the first prize, while the institute also collected the Outstanding Organization Award. It is the third time CIT has topped the finals of this event.

This year’s task drew on the Wupeng boat, a piece of Zhejiang intangible cultural heritage. Entrants had to design a streamlined hull that resisted impact, balanced payload with speed and optimised the structural system, fostering both innovation and teamwork. The competition aimed to inspire university students’ innovation awareness, refine their engineering practical skills, promote the inheritance and innovation of Wupeng boat craftsmanship, and arouse young people’s attention and passion for traditional skills.
On-site Loading Test
This year’s competition selected 120 elite teams from 119 universities across the country. These teams were chosen from 1,792 teams representing 591 universities that participated in the divisional competitions covering 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government. The CIT model weighed 156.6 g and passed three loading tests: 8 kg level-one (catapult runs of 13.7 s and 24.5 s), 1.5 kg eccentric level-two, and 27 kg full-load level-three (return runs of 6.3 s and 21.4 s), finishing all runs in 3 min 30 s. The total time taken for the tests was 3.5 minutes, and the team won the first prize for its outstanding performance. Alongside the contest, the first “Civil Engineering in the New Era” seminar brought competition and academic discussion together.
Approved by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance, the contest is one of nine national “Category-A” events and the premier student competition in civil engineering. The competition profoundly advances practical education reforms in universities, cultivates innovation, entrepreneurship, creativity, and teamwork skills among contemporary college students, significantly enhancing CIT’s influence and reputation among civil engineering institutions.
