                                              “Farewell on the Ancient Grassland”

                                                                                  By Bai Juyi

Lush, lush grass on the plain,

Once every year it sears and grows.

Wildfire can not burn it out,

Spring breeze blows it back to life.

Distant scent invades the ancient path,

Sunny green joins the arid towns.

Another send-off to our wanderlust son,

Sad, sad leave-taking exuberant.

Translated by Yu Zheng

Farewell on the Ancient Grassland is a poem written by poet Bai Juyi from the Tang Dynasty, The wild field is covered with lush green grass, turning yellow in autumn and winter, but becoming thick and green again in spring. Wildfires cannot burn away the grass, as the spring wind blows and the land turns lush once more. The fragrant wild grass in the distance covers the ancient path, and under the sunlight, the arid towns appear green. Today, I bid farewell to an old friend again, even the lush grass is filled with the sentiment of parting.
