School of Municipal and Environmental Engineering

2024/07/10

The School of Municipal and Environmental Engineering traces its origins to the Water Supply and Drainage Engineering program established in 1983. Currently, it offers three undergraduate programs: Water Supply and Drainage Science and Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Environmental Science. The school is an accredited institution for professional master's degree education in municipal engineering under the civil and hydraulic engineering discipline, with a current enrollment of over 800 full-time undergraduate and graduate students.

The school boasts two provincial-level research platforms: the Jilin Province Key Laboratory of Urban Wastewater Treatment and the Urban Wastewater Treatment Technology Resource Sharing Service Platform. It also houses one Jilin Province Water Treatment Technology Vocational Skills Training Base and one provincial-level graduate workstation. The school has under its jurisdiction on-campus facilities, such as the Municipal and Environmental Experimental Teaching Center, the Student Innovation and Practice Center, and the BIM Teaching Division. The school’s practical teaching facilities cover 1,500 square meters, with equipment valued at over 20 million RMB. Off-campus, it operates a pilot-scale urban wastewater treatment plant with a daily capacity of 1,000 cubic meters and an industry-academia-research base for the National Major Science and Technology Project "Enhanced Low-Temperature Biological Treatment Technology for Urban Wastewater", recognized as one of the Ministry of Science and Technology’s 100 exemplary demonstration projects nationwide.

The School of Municipal and Environmental Engineering has a faculty of 42 members, including 9 professors, 15 associate professors, and 12 master’s supervisors, with 33 teachers holding doctoral degrees.

The school’s Engineering and Environmental Safety discipline was selected as a provincial "13th Five-Year Plan" emerging interdisciplinary discipline, while the Environmental Science and Engineering discipline is designated as a university-level key construction discipline. The Water Supply and Drainage Science and Engineering program passed the Engineering Education Professional Certification (Evaluation) by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development in 2019 and was selected as a provincial-level first-class undergraduate program in the same year. In 2021, it was further recognized as a national-level first-class undergraduate program.

Leveraging the strengths of its provincial key disciplines and laboratories, the school actively engages in scientific research and social services. Over the past decade, it has undertaken 116 research projects at national, provincial, ministerial, and enterprise levels, securing cumulative funding exceeding 20 million RMB. These include three National Major Science and Technology Projects and six National Natural Science Foundation projects. Faculty members have published over 200 research papers and obtained 15 national invention patents and 35 utility model patents. The school has received 15 provincial-level or higher scientific awards, including one National Science and Technology Progress Second Prize and six Jilin Provincial Science and Technology Progress Second and Third Prizes.
