Technology Person | Chen Tiehua: Service Provider in Hydropower Industry

2024/02/20

Chen Tiehua, professor of the School of Energy and Power Engineering, Doctor of Engineering, master tutor, provincial famous teacher, school-level gold medal teacher. Academic leader of "Water Conservancy and Hydropower Engineering", a key second-level discipline with advantages and characteristics in Jilin Provincial universities, academic leader of "Renewable Energy Science and Engineering", a key discipline of "13th Five-Year Plan" of CIT, and leader of the customized class for new energy scarce talents in Jilin Province.

First, adhere to the original intention of education and take on the mission of educating people

From 1995 to 2010, She mainly undertook the teaching tasks of Thermal Energy and Power Engineering (Hydrodynamics),  and presided over the construction of the  Hydroelectric Power Laboratory, which is still the only laboratory in domestic universities that can physically simulate the operation of  hydroelectric power plants.

In the teaching process, Ms. Chen devoted herself to the study of professional connotation, and combined theoretical knowledge with on-site practice. With solid professional knowledge and rich teaching experience, she edited the "Principles and Operation of Hydrogenerators", "Wind power Generation Technology", "Wind power Generation Professional English Reading" and other "12th Five-Year" and "13th Five-Year" national planning textbooks. Among them, the "Principles and Operation of Hydroelectric Generators" won the second prize of provincial excellent teaching materials. These professional textbooks not only solve the teaching problems of the specialty, but also have been adopted by electric power enterprises as on-site technical training materials, and have a high influence in the fields of hydropower and new energy.

Second, devote to scientific research to serve the hydropower industry

With the opportunity to take students to the field practice, Ms. Chen has gained in-depth understanding of on-site technology and existing problems, devoted herself to scientific research, based on sensing technology, automatic control technology, computer and network technology research operation equipment remote monitoring and automatic control, and actively participated in the technical transformation of hydropower plants. Thrust bearing, known as the "heart" of the hydrogenerator, has always been a blind spot in the monitoring of hydropower units. In the reconstruction process of Fengman Power Plant, Ms. Chen completely solved the problem of monitoring the oil film thickness of the thrust bearing of hydropower units by changing the installation method of the sensors, and the method is the pioneer in the industry. Also in the reconstruction process of Fengman Power plant, Ms. Chen  applied the large-scale lifting machinery walking control technology that she had studied for many years to the Fengman Dam gantry crane, achieving a breakthrough in the precise positioning technology of hydraulic gates and promoting the intelligent construction of hydropower plants.  With the rapid growth of China's hydropower installed capacity, hydropower technology is also developing rapidly, Ms. Chen closely follows the development of on-site technology, and actively carries out research projects for smart power plants.

After years of professional accumulation and continuous practice, Ms. Chen has the ability to undertake the technical transformation of hydropower plants, and has carried out technical services and achievements transformation in more than 10 hydropower plants. Presided over and participated in the completion of more than 20 horizontal projects of hydropower plants, with contract funds of more than 6 million yuan. Twice won the CIT Science and Technology Service Social Contribution Award. In 2011, she was named one of the top 100 scientific and technological workers in Changchun.

Ms. Chen's expertise also plays a role in international service. Ethiopia, Nigeria and Tanzania are all countries that have signed cooperation agreements related to the "Belt and Road" with China, and use China's "two preferential loans" for hydropower stations construction, but the hydropower technology in these countries is relatively backward, and after the completion of the power stations, technical training for power station technicians in power station operation, maintenance, overhaul and other aspects is required. From 2019 to 2023, Ms. Chen went to Africa for three times to participate in international hydropower technology training. The content includes the structure, working principle, operation and control of the main and auxiliary equipment of hydropower station, involving fluid, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and control and other 5 disciplines. Each training has won the admiration and recognition of Chinese hydropower technology from African countries, and won honor for the motherland and the school.

Third, brave mission, open up new professional construction

With the change of global energy structure and the rapid development of new energy industry, Ms. Chen accepted the task of new professional construction of "Wind energy and power Engineering" in 2010. At that time, only six universities in the country offered this major. In 2012, the major was renamed "New Energy Science and Engineering". Ms. Chen led the teaching and research team to carry out enterprise research for many times, exchange with similar colleges and universities, think hard about the design of teaching system, repeatedly revise and improve the training program and teaching syllabus, apply for special funds, and apply for collaborative education projects. At present, the new energy major is "the first batch of customized classes for new energy shortage talents in Jilin Province", and graduates will mainly serve the "one main six pairs" new energy industry in Jilin Province.
