Multiple Measures Taken by School of Foreign Languages 

to Improve Teachers' Scientific Research Literacy

The spring of 2022 arrived as scheduled, but the epidemic gloom has not cleared as expected. Relentless office work at home and online classes didn’t stop teachers of School of Foreign Languages from scientific research work.


1. To Organize Lectures on Application for High-level Scientific Research Projects


In March, the School of Foreign Languages actively organized teachers to apply for a total of 10 Social Science Foundation Projects of Jilin Province in 2022 a total of 10 projects for the Social Science Foundation of Jilin Province in 2022. In order to improve the quality of the application for scientific research projects, on March 12, the School invited Associate Professor Gang Yang, post-doctor of the School of Foreign Languages of Shandong University, to provide targeted counseling for teachers applying for scientific research projects through Tencent meetings.


On March 16, the School invited Associate Professor Gang Yang from Shandong University again, to give an academic report entitled “Design(Designing) and Writing of Application for ‘Cloud-based’ Scientific Research Projects” to all teachers of the School. A total of 500 foreign language colleagues from colleges and universities in China attended the meeting(lecture).


2. To Organize Teachers to Attend Domestic High-end Academic Workshop Conferences


In addition to organizing high-level academic meetings conferences, Deputy Dean Ms.Yongjuan Chu often collects information about various “Cloud-based” academic meetings conferences on foreign language teaching and research, and forwards it to the teachers’ Wechat working group of the School for teachers to attend and study by themselves teachers in the School of Foreign Languages for them to attend and study, so as to broaden their academic research horizons and keep in touch with the academic research trends of foreign language disciplines at home and abroad.

From April 9 to 10, the School organized all the teachers to participate in the “11th National College English Dean/Chairman Advanced Forum”—Jointly Building a High-quality Foreign Language Teaching New Ecosystem” organized by the Steering Committee for College Foreign Language Teaching of the Ministry of Education, which was hosted by the Steering Committee for Teaching Foreign Languages in Universities of the Ministry of Education, Yunnan University and Shanghai International Studies University, to understand discuss how foreign language teachers can use educational information technology and language intelligence technology to promote college English smart intelligent teaching first-class curriculum construction, development and utilization of high-quality digital resources, and practical promotion of high-quality development of foreign language education in China. Teachers of the School actively participated in the meeting and benefited a lot from it. 30 teachers received certificates of completion.The conference was a great success. Thirty teachers were awarded certificates of completion.


3. To Research Textbook Compilation Textbook development studies


While working at home and having online courses, Dean Ms.Yongjuan Chu, together with relevant teachers of the School of Civil Engineering and the School of Management, organized 10 backbone teachers of the School of Foreign Languages and 2021 graduate students of Civil Engineering to compile the English textbook for foreign Civil Engineering. Through the interdisciplinary combination of “English + Civil Engineering + Management + Cross-Cultural Communication”, foreign language teachers’ teaching literacy of English for special purposes is improved. At the same time, it lays a foundation for the reform of College English Teaching—“General English + Academic English + English for Special Purposes (ESP)”, and better serves the cultivation of compound applied talents at CIT.
